Connecting to what is Sacred

A series each Wednesday that explores what is Sacred. We will journey about the many possibilities this journey presents.

SACRED!

When you hear the word Sacred what images first come to your mind?

What words do you think of?

How do you feel?

Do you associate a smell or a taste?

I will begin this series sharing with you my answers to these questions. As we explore each week I hope you will join on your own journey and with your own answers!

I must say that I have given much thought to my answer about smell or taste. I don’t recall associating a smell or taste when I am talking about or hear the word Sacred. I WILL share that there are times that when I am in what I consider Sacred places (which may not always be a church building) that I have a heightened sense of smell and awareness of what is in the space…

I have others share with me that they often smell incense or oils or other fragrances during various times in life with little regard for the physical location. I have not experienced that, to date.

Do you associate a smell or taste when you hear or speak about the Sacred?

Reduce Stress and Relax

There are many things you can do without a gym membership or yoga class to reduce stress and relax. Here is one…

Deep Breathing

Breathing deeply in and out for just one minute can help to refresh your mind and reset your body. Harvard University research in the 1970s conducted by Dr. Herbert Benson found that short periods of meditation that focused on the breath had the power to alter the body’s stress responses, activating the “relaxation response.” Find a quiet place to sit for one minute, focusing on breathing deeply in and out and letting go of distracting thoughts.

When I hear the word or I am talking about the Sacred, I feel calm. I feel like I am tethered with something greater than myself. I feel that I am free to choose, learn, and go in any direction “I” want. And, at the same time, I feel the need to pay attention, be patient.

I don’t think my connection to what I know as Sacred is particularly different, less/more interesting than a connection that anyone else has. What I do know, is “my” connection is simply that; my connection. It may resonate with some, it may not make sense to others, and some may consider it “hogwash.” And that, is ok. As I said, it is what I have come to understand, know and realize.

How do you feel when you hear the word Sacred or talk about it?

Reduce Stress and Relax

There are many things you can do without a gym membership or yoga class to reduce stress and relax. Here is one…

Email Meditation

Email is one of the biggest Internet stressors, and when we’re at our desks dealing with a pile of unread messages and a growing “follow-up” folder, it’s easy to get a little anxious.

The Internet and e-mail are now a way of life and a principal means of communication in the twenty-first century. It is quite easy to be totally consumed by the Internet, chained to our chair, forgetting to get up and move around, eat or be in touch with our body. After hours of staring at our computer screen, our eyes are strained, our back may hurt, our shoulders are stiff, and our mind can become numb.

We can refresh ourselves easily by breathing with awareness. The following meditation is very helpful in preventing major mistakes or disasters that occur when we are on computer overload, like sending sensitive e-mails to unintended recipients. You can use it whenever you write an e-mail before you click “Send.”

Breathing in, I thank the power of the Internet.

Breathing out, I am fully conscious of my current e-mail actions.
